PACKAGING AN EMOTION

The requirements for this project were for an emotion to be selected and then treated as an actual product. I needed to design a package for the emotion as well as create a prototype of the product itself.

THE PRODUCT

Image of the product unpackaged and the manual it comes with. This is the AWE cube on top of its base

PROCESS

1

1

Sketch and written ideas.

2

2

Initial sketches.

3

3

Sculpture of the galaxy, used for a mold.

4

4

Mold negative created using the sculpture.

5

5

Plastic positive created from using the mold.

6

6

Base paint applied.

7

7

Second application of paint.

8

8

holes created for fiber optics to pass through.

9

9

Fiber optic wires temporarily held in place.

10

10

Another look of the strands. And the directional tubes applied.

11

11

Two different tubes allow for a greater variety in light changes.

12

12

Sample with the lights activated.

13

13

Sorting the pigments to be used.

14

14

Tests with the pigments in resin. Time stamped experiments for reproducing the desired effects.

15

15

Another look at the time stamps. Some experiments lasted 8 hrs.

16

16

Closer look of the tests.

17

17

Top view.

18

18

Example of pigment added to the resin far too soon.

19

19

Example of pigment added to resin at the right time.

20

20

A cube was made of plasticine which was then used to create a mold. The cube was hand made to give the finished cube a more organic feel and less fabricated feel.

21

21

The model is placed inside and its fiber optic strands are passed through the mold.

22

22

View under the mold. Hole with a larger tube which holds all the fiber optic strands.

23

23

Resin is then poured into the mold.

24

24

The mold was left for the correct desired amount of time before pigment was added.

25

25

The desired designs and colours were added.

26

26

The mold is left to cure.

27

27

The base is created using styrene.

28

28

Diagram and wiring for the LEDs, batteries, on/off switch, and pressure switch.

29

29

Wiring placed inside the base and further base construction including the guiding rods.

30

30

9 volt battery connection to deans connector.

31

31

Final fitment tests before painting.

32

32

Tests to insure the light function worked when the cube was touched.

33

33

Finished product.

34

34

Product packaged with correct labels located underneath to help keep a clean appearance.
